Professor of paediatrics, MD Hans Bisgaard has unexpectedly and far too soon passed away aged 67 after a long and impressive research career.
In 2002, Hans established a translational research center – the COpenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood (COPSAC) – where clinical and basic researchers collaborated, long before it became the norm elsewhere. Here Hans also established the COPSAC cohorts with 1,111 families and children. Hans had great respect for the families who dedicated themselves to research, which he often talked about.
Hans will be remembered as a pioneer in his field of research, where he has made a huge difference for children with asthma and has moved the field of scientific research forward. He will be missed by his patients, his current and former colleagues, everyone he has mentored, as well as all the many national and international partners he has had throughout his long career.
The COPSAC study with its translational clinical research approach based on long-term studies of mother-child cohorts with deep phenotyping and exposure assessment, combined with genotyping and sequencing of the microbiome, insight into the genetic regulation of basic biological processes, and state-of-the-art systems biology methods holds the promise to improve our understanding of the processes causing disease in individual patients and the interaction between heredity and environment.
